Next week the elementary school will be taking MAP tests. The 5th grade schedule is as follows:
Monday - Language 8:15 - 9:15
Tuesday - Reading 9:30 - 10:30
Wednesday - Math 8:15 - 9:15
Please help to support your 5th grader by reminding them to go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep. You can also help by making sure they eat a healthy breakfast before coming to school. During MAP testing week, there will only be nightly reading for homework. As always, this may be done in an independent reading book, Raz Kids, or Newsela.
Next week, students will be applying the skills they learned about measurement in volume in order to design pools for an aquatic center. This is an in-class project that we will share with you on Portfolio Day!
We continue to work on our informative essays. Next week we will make sure we have accurately cited quotations, domain-specific vocabulary, transition words, and an engaging introduction. This is an in-class assignment, but students needing extra time may need to stay for reinforcements with me from 3:00-3:30 or do additional work at home.
The 5th graders are very excited to start the Caine’s Arcade engineering challenge! Please save any cardboard boxes or other recyclable materials you may have at home for this. If you would like to learn more about Caine’s Arcade, check out the video on this website.
We have begun our study of the American colonies, focusing on the geographical differences between the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. This will help students learn about geography, as well as prepare them for future study of U.S. history in middle and high school.
