This week, students have been applying their knowledge of volume in order to design an aquatic park! They have all successfully convinced their “boss” of their ability to calculate volume using unit cubes and formulas, and next week will be using these formulas to accurately design pools. For homework next week, they will be asked to do 3 20-minute sessions of online math review. They may choose between Khan Academy, Zearn, and Freckle for this assignment.
Next week we will be wrapping up the informative essays that students have worked so hard on this quarter. This is an in-class assignment, but those who have been absent or need more help may need time to work at home. Students are also invited to stay for reinforcements from 3-3:30 if they need additional help.
The Caine’s Arcade engineering project is in full swing! We’re in need of cardboard boxes for this project, so if you have any that you are able to send in for this we would be very appreciative. Your 5th grader may need help gathering other tools and materials as well. Please encourage them not to spend money on things, but rather to use their engineering minds in order to think of ways to use recycled materials and simple tools to create their arcade games.
The 5th graders did a great job taking middle-school style notes as we studied the geographical and human features of three American colonial regions. We’re focusing mostly on the early United States in preparation for middle and high school history, but your 5th grader may enjoy learning about the colonial history of other countries represented in our class, such as Canada and the Dominican Republic as well. This is a good opportunity to extend their learning at home - we have a lot of history lovers in this group!
