We’re nearing the end of our unit on adding and subtracting fractions! The fifth grade has been working so hard to learn a variety of numbers for adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers! We’ll review on Monday and Tuesday and take the final test for these standards on Wednesday. Thursday night the test will go home with a reflection sheet to be signed, then brought back Friday for the portfolios.
We have spent the last few weeks reading and analyzing examples of opinion and evidence in writing; now we are writing our own persuasive essays on Google Docs. The focus is to use persuasive language and transition words, as well as to organize ideas into paragraphs. Next week we’ll be revising and editing the essays so we can publish before break!
We had fun this week examining the moon and learning about the lunar cycle. Check out the class website for photos of the students simulating moon phases using flashlights and styrofoam balls! Next week we’ll be learning about the planets and reviewing all we have learned about the sun, earth, moon, and planets.
Students are learning economic concepts as well as practicing their note-taking skills as we finish our unit on economics. We will be reviewing key ideas and vocabulary Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in preparation for a test Thursday. I will be giving students a set of flashcards to practice vocabulary on Monday. Fifth grades may want to use these at home as well to prepare for Thursday’s test.

This week the 5th graders have taught the ISS elementary about coding. It has been an exciting and wonderful experience to teach the elementary a skill that has never been taught in ISS. They have done a very good job and all of the elementary has had a blast.
