We had a great first week in 5th grade! The students have adapted to the new routines and procedures quickly, and are embracing their new status as role models of the Elementary School!
In math, we talked about the language of mathematics and brainstormed different ways to translate the four operations in word problems. We also talked about growth mindset and checked out an online course entitled “How to Learn Math” through Stanford University. Ask your fifth grader what he or she learned about math and the brain! And check out the course here!
In language arts, we’re loving our first class read aloud book Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. This not only serves as a great mentor text for our narrative writing unit, but also provides an opportunity to discuss important themes such as growing up, inclusion, and kindness.
In science we discussed the scientific method and how scientists think. We will continue with science next week, then do social studies the following week, and continue alternating between the two subjects weekly.
The highlight of the week was the new interactive projector that was installed in our room! We had so much fun exploring this new technology and thinking of ways to use it to enhance learning. We also enjoyed coming up with class jobs together today; responsibility is an important part of 5th grade, and I’m so happy to see the 5th graders’ enthusiasm about making sure our class runs smoothly.
Now that we’ve created a fun, positive classroom community and established new routines, we will be delving deeper into the curriculum next week. Remember that next Tuesday there is no school. And don’t forget to put Meet the Teacher Night on August 25th from 4-5 on your calendar!
I’m enjoying these exuberant, hard-working students so much, and I look forward to partnering with you to support their learning journeys this year!
