Maths
Hello everyone! I can't believe that it has only been a couple of months and yet the learning that has taken place in Grade 1 has been truly incredible!
The children started by solving missing number addition and subtraction problems. They used a numberline and also calculated mentally by doing the INVERSE. Ask your child to show you how to solve missing number problems e.g. ? + 5 = 12 or 14 - ? = 3 where the question mark is represented with a box. Please continue to support your child with this at home; take a look at this video example of the strategies we have used in class - for larger amounts, we used a numberline to help.
As well as this, Grade One learned all about balanced equations by relating this to our science theme of balancing. The children created number sentences that had balanced answers including both addition and subtraction. They also extended their learning by combining their strategies and solving missing number balanced equations! The truly were amazing!
This week we are continuing to recap place value. The children are gaining more of an understanding that the digits in a number are worth something and they also understand how units (or ones) become tens and how tens become hundreds - some of them are even working with 4 digit numbers! The children made digit flip cards to help them when adding multiples of 10 or when switching between adding and subtracting units, tens or hundreds. Encourage your child to practise at home by playing place value bingo or I'm thinking of a number or try this interactive place value game.
ENGLISH
The children have also been busy in English. They wrote superhero explanations using a Talk for Writing technique where they made actions to help them remember what they were going to say, and then write. Have a look outside the Grade One classroom to see your child's explanation more closely.
This week the children are continuing with narrative and are planning their own superhero stories. The children have learnt about the 'ingredients' that make good stories and haave been looking more closely at the plot using story mountains. The children will be presenting their stories interactively using MS Powerpoint once they have finished planning and drafting them and the stories will be published on the Grade One webpage so watch out for this!
In reading, the focus has been on non fiction texts to give the children more of an understanding of the features such as introductions, subheadings and diagrams, when they were writing their explanations. This week we will be focussing on fiction and the children will be exploring the features or ingredients as well as identifying them and collecting interesting language that they can then transfer to their own writing.
