Today, September 2, 2015, we took surveys to find out "Do you have a dog, cat, bird, fish?" Students created and conducted their own surveys. Dylan made the astute observation: "I lost track of who I surveyed!" We then discussed how we could better design a survey to keep track of who we surveyed.
Today, September 1, 2015, is Dayanara's 7th Birthday and our first birthday celebration as a 1st Grade Class!
In our 1st 2 weeks of school, we have explored many of our math learning tools while studying geometry. We have been focusing on defining different shapes by their number of sides and angles. The students also enjoyed using their imaginations and creating symmetrical repeating patterns with the pattern blocks.
In the photo below, Naomi is teaching us how 6 triangles can fit together to create 1 hexagon.
Students have also explored creating and describing geometric shapes while using the Geo-boards.
As scientists, we are learning how different plants inhabit different environments and have external features that help them thrive in different kinds of places. We took a walk around campus to focus on various plants and how their roots, leaves, flowers, and fruit help their survive in their environment. We planted beans on Wednesday, the 26th and many of them have already grown incredibly! (pictures to come!) We are caring for our plants daily and keeping track of their growth on a calendar.
While preparing my family's dinner, I found a cocoon on our broccoli and brought it in to share with the students. We excitedly observed the cocoon closely every day. On Friday, August 28th, the mystery insect emerged and I was fortunate enough to catch the moth on camera before it flew away to complete it's life cycle.
Our 1st graders are impressively independent readers! In the pictures below, students demonstrate various reading strategies they use to read new and difficult words. In the 1st picture, Oscar is using the photographs in his non-fiction text and matching the photo to the word "fruit."
Thristan is reading a difficult word by "chunking it", or reading it by syllables.
We started our 1st day of 1st grade with "Morning Circle"
We had spanish and art specials today.
We are already a great team! We help each other, share our classroom materials, take turns, listen to each other and read together. This is just the beginning of a wonderful year together!
