Looking Ahead to Middle School
This week in class we discussed the transition to Middle School. I reminded the 5th graders that it’s very normal to be nervous, excited, or a little bit of both! In order to help the students feel prepared for the transition, Ms. Prendergast will be taking them on a middle school tour where they will meet their teachers and learn more about the middle school program. This will be next Wednesday during the school day. For parents, there will be an orientation with Ms. Prendergast at 3pm on Tuesday, May 29th. See the email sent by Ms. Prendergast for more details!
Come check out the finalized Caine’s Arcade projects next Friday, June 1st! This week students worked hard to build their games, and today in class we tested them out and found ways to make them even better. Next week, we will be testing the improved projects again, and finalizing the games for Friday. Students are given class time to work on projects, but those needing extra time may want to stay after school from 3-3:30 or arrange to work on their project outside of school. I’m impressed by the creativity and engineering skills in this class!
Celebrating Writing in Spanish
The Spanish teachers will be honoring children with certificates for their hard work on the stories they have been writing during their time in Spanish class. The awards ceremony will be held for grades 2-5 at 8:15 on Monday, May 28th in the covered court. Please remain behind after Morning Circle for the celebration of writers.
Students will be sharing their portfolios and reflecting upon the year on Wednesday, June 6th from 3-4pm. Please sign up for a 15-minute time slot where your 5th grader will present highlights from his or her portfolio. Remember, these are student-led conferences, so I will be in the room, but your child will be leading the conference. You can support your 5th grader by being positive and asking guiding questions. See this list for possible questions.
Students had fun applying their measurement skills in order to design aquatic parks this week - look for their final designs in the portfolio on Student-Led Conference day! Next week, we will begin previewing some middle school math skills such as coordinate grids. There will be a nightly Zearn lesson for homework on Monday and Tuesday, then none for the rest of the week (or the following week - this will be the final math homework of the year!)
