On Thursday we will leave from ISS promptly at 9:30 to take the bus to Puerto Plata. There, we will visit the San Felipe fort and enjoy a picnic lunch. Students who normally eat lunch in the cafeteria will have a bag lunch prepared by Mari Carmen. After lunch, we will head to the Jewish Museum in Sosua, where Jordi’s mom Jenny has prepared a scavenger hunt to teach us more about Jewish history right here in Sosua. We still need two more chaperones - if you’re interested please email me! Also, I’ve asked the 5th graders NOT to bring devices on the field trip. The purpose is to enjoy a nice day out as a class, not to play video games or use social media. If students bring phones, they need to remain off and inside their backpacks.
We finished up our unit on multiplying and dividing fractions this week with a test Friday. Students will be getting their test back on Tuesday for reflection. They are asked to have their test signed by a parent Tuesday night and returned to school Wednesday to add to the portfolio. Our next unit is geometry and measurement - we’ll be using their knowledge of two- and three- dimensional figures to find area and volume.
We will be finishing up our informative essays next week. Students will be given time to edit and revise in class, but may want additional time to work on their essays at home. There will not be written reading response homework next week so that students have time to work on their essays and hand them in by Friday. This is the rubric I will use to assess them.
