Our next service learning activity with the DREAM Project will be Wednesday, May 3rd. We will be leaving ISS at 2:00 pm in order to get to the DREAM Project in Cabarete by 2:15 pm, then leave the DREAM Project at 2:45 pm in order to return to ISS by 3:00 pm dismissal. While there, we will team up with the students from the DREAM Project Literacy Group and read to the children in the Montessori program. Students will choose books to read in advance and practice reading in Spanish class in preparation for our trip. We will be using parent drivers for this trip. The fifth graders definitely love and care about the earth! Their big project was the Recylcin’ Roo play with Ms. Lantz, but we also integrated Earth Day into our lessons today. In math, students used the skills they’ve been working on this year in order to solve an Earth Day-themed math mystery, “The Case of the Litterbug.” In language arts, we’ve been studying poetry and how to determine the theme of a poem. First, students read and analyzed Earth Day poems. Then, we went outside and used our beautiful campus as inspiration to write haikus, diamante poems, acrostic poems, cinquains, and shape poems about the earth. Then students were asked to write a poem whose theme was “respect the earth.” We used recyclable materials to decorate the poems. Some students wanted more time to make theirs extra creative. They’ll be given class time Monday, and anyone who hasn’t finished will finish for homework Monday night. The poems are due Tuesday - look for them outside our classroom next week!
As we enter the final stretch, we’ve hit the time of year where many supplies have been used up, broken, or lost. Your fifth grader may need more pencils, lined paper, etc. to get through these final weeks. It’s important that they have their supplies ready each day, so they don’t miss class time scrambling to find something to write with.
We’re kicking off our last unit next week! We’ll be studying the coordinate plane, which is great preparation for middle school math. Students will be asked to complete a Zearn lesson each night, but are welcome to work ahead if they would like.
The fourth quarter is all about physical science! The fifth graders have a good concept of matter and understand how the difference in particle speed and density causes three states of matter: solid, gas, and liquid. They also understand how adding or removing energy, such as heat, can lead to physical changes in matter. Next week we will begin looking at mixtures, and exploring what makes some mixtures into solutions. The kitchen is a great place to practice chemistry! Ask your 5th grader to point out mixtures and solutions at the dinner table
We learned so much about immigration from Jordi’s mom Jenny at our visit to the Jewish Museum in Sosua, and now we’re talking about reasons why people immigrated to the Americas during colonial times. Students understand that there are push factors, which make people want or need to leave their home country, as well as pull factors, which are incentives for people to move to a new place. Students have also made connections between their own family’s experiences with immigration. Talk to your 5th grader about people who have immigrated in your family, and different push and pull factors that led to immigration. They enjoy sharing their stories in class, and it makes the lessons more real for them!
