Martina Serra and a huge thank to Christal Earl and her workers that took time to teach us about Brave Soles and what they do in our community.
There will be no school on Monday due to a Dominican holiday.
I hope you have a nice long weekend with your family
The 5th graders did really well with last week’s study of the order of operations. They learned that going step by step helps to evaluate problems more accurately. Their quiz on this topic will go home Monday to be signed. As always, students needing extra help are welcome to stay for reinforcements after school until 3:30 and retake the quiz to improve their score. Next week we begin our study of fractions! Fractions are a big, important concept in 5th grade math. You can help your 5th grader practice their fraction skills by helping them to use fractions in “real life”. There are many examples of fractions in cooking, sports, and my personal favorite - pizza!
Students finished writing their narrative stories today. For quarter 2, we will focus on reading and writing nonfiction. In reading, we will be identifying the main idea of reading passages and looking for supporting details. In writing, we will extend our study of the Earth’s resources and begin writing persuasive essays about how we can protect the Earth. Stay tuned!
Quarter 2 is all about life science! We’ve been talking about food chains and the ecosystem, and thinking about how energy is transferred through living things via food chains.
In social studies, we have extended our study of culture to think about cultural diffusion - the spread of culture. I’m really impressed by the connections students are able to make between elements of culture and the way various cultures affect our lives. Next, we will begin studying world religions. This is meant to give students a perspective on history and the world we live in, and not be any form of religious or spiritual instruction. We will emphasize the importance of respecting the variety of religious beliefs within our own community, and discuss how understanding the basic principles of various religions helps us to better understand one another.
