Welcome to the wonderful world of social studies! I am excited to be here and to be working with you! A common theme of all social studies/humanities based courses includes the search for patterns and connections among human societies across space and time. It's imperative that we, as members of a global society, develop the skills to interact as thoughtful, inclusive, and engaged individuals. My courses are designed to develop these skills as we grapple with compelling questions and enduring understandings that have existed throughout human history, to the present day. Please come prepared each day with the tools necessary to learn. These include: a notebook, writing utensils, colored pencils, and personal laptop/tablet. Most importantly, please come to class with an eagerness to engage and participate with an open mind. We will enjoy lively debates and discussion while also remembering the importance of empathy and respecting multiple perspectives. I look forward to learning with you as we all continue to grow and develop as active global citizens.
Hello! My name is Leonore Heino, though most everyone calls me Nori. I have been a social studies teacher in Minnesota, USA, for 18 years and am looking forward to starting my 19th year of teaching here in the beautiful Dominican Republic! Additionally, I have spent four summers teaching social studies to international students at a boarding school in the Swiss Alps. My two children, Phoebe (grade 8) and Gunnar (grade 6), will be joining the ISS community along with me and we are eager to immerse ourselves in the richness of the North Coast.
