Math at the International School of SOsua!
***Distance Learning Plan*** March 18, 2020
Starting March 19, 2020, ISS will be implementing its Distance Learning Plan. During distance learning, our main platform will continue to be Google Classroom, where all announcements, assignments and schedules for the day can be found. Students do not need to have their textbooks at home as I will continue to post pictures of the assignments and textbook pages on Google Classroom. We also will be utilizing Google Meet and Google Hangouts as additional tools to meet as a class and in smaller groups. Our Google Meet sessions will be our central time for questions, discussions and learning together. Students will need their normal classroom materials (pencil, pen, calculator, notebook, individual devices, etc.) during our classroom sessions. Please make sure you are regularly checking your email and Google Classroom for updates. The best way for students to contact me outside of our Google Meet sessions is through email and Google Hangouts. I will have specific “office hours” for each class in the afternoon that students can utilize. Please try to stick to your class’s time frame for office hours. Please be patient with this process as we transition to online learning as this is new for everyone. Do not hesitate to ask questions.
Hello and welcome to the 6th-9th grade math page! My goal this year is for every student to improve their math skills and to meet or exceed the Common Core Math Standards, which our curriculum at the International School of Sosua is aligned to! I believe all students can achieve, and I want every student to be successful in my class!
Each unit, we will focus on specific learning targets for students to master. Students in 6th-8th grade will be assessed using Standards-Based Grading. Grade 9 will also utilize the same model, but their final grade will be a percentage. Through activities and assessments, students will show their progress towards mastery of the learning targets. Once students have made progress and showed their understanding of the material, they will get to move on to other topics or assignments. To learn more about this model, please click here.
6th Grade Math is a course used to apply and extend previous understandings to create a strong foundation of math for the upper years of secondary. Two of our overall objectives are to develop a strong number sense and solve one step equations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
7th Grade Pre-Algebra is a course used to introduce the fundamentals of Algebra. Two of our overall objectives are to understand how to solve one step, two step, and multistep equations and to apply previous understandings of operations to rational numbers.
8th Grade Algebra is a course used to provide a development of the algebraic skills necessary for students to succeed in higher level math courses. This course focuses on problem solving skills and the concept of a function.
9th Grade Geometry is a course used as the study of the properties and applications of geometric figures in two and three dimensions. Geometry emphasizes justifying properties of geometric figures.

Supplies for success
Please bring every day to class:
All 6th-9th grade math classes will be using Google Classroom. It is an expectation that students check their Google Classroom daily for announcements, notes, helpful resources, assignments and extra practice. Classroom codes will be shared during the first week of school. Please see Ms. Johnston if you do not know the code!
