The first full month of school has come to a close. Overall, I am extremely content with the response of the stakeholders to the new initiatives and improvement efforts implemented during the summer and beginning days of the school year. Highlights of some of the initiatives included:
• Construction of a new classroom in Elementary (thanks to Eric Urbahn and SIT who designed the building). Construction of the Grade 1 classroom also permitted the allocation of another classroom for Spanish and Social Studies for Secondary.
• Construction of a new “kiosko” in PreSchool (thanks to the Gude family for donating the roof tiles) and “palapas” in the Secondary.
• New tetherballs (thanks to PTA and the Scates family) and new dips and pull-up bar.
• Improvements to the green areas (thanks to the Bowcutt, Cowern, Nadal, and Tannelian family for donating time and materials).
• Purchasing new Reading texts for elementary and Science texts for Secondary.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thanks those parents who attended Open House to learn more about these advances and to get to know their Child’s Homeroom Teacher.
Our new teachers (9) and students (29) have adapted well to their new home and each brings unique characteristics that will enrich the learning environment. ISS is blessed to have an amazing group of professional teachers and administrators that work incredibly hard to create a positive and quality educational experience for your children.
During the next weeks, parents will begin to receive the results from the standardized testing that we performed at the beginning of the school year. If you would like more information regarding your child’s results on the MAP (Measure Academic Progress) and the STAR Tests (measure basic reading vocabulary and math skills), please make an appointment with counselor.
Students that did not meet the expectations on the standardized tests and/or are not passing the ISS Learning Objectives will be invited to attend reinforcement. This year, reinforcement will work by appointments so that the teachers can work in small groups with the students that most need assistance. Reinforcement by invitation will occur on Wednesdays in Elementary except those Wed. which are set aside for Professional Development (on average, once a month). In Secondary, teachers will invite students in accordance with the following schedule:
• Monday – English and Social Studies
• Tuesday – Math
• Wednesday – Science
• Thursday – Math
ISS has made two other significant changes that are important to note:
1. In Secondary, all students and teachers have been provided access codes and passwords to be used to enter EDLINE (www.edline.net). EDLINE is an online virtual learning platform where students and parents can monitor their grades and receive additional information posted by their teachers in reference to homework and upcoming assignments.
2. In Elementary and PreSchool, we moved to a trimester system meaning that students will only receive report cards three times a year. In addition, report cards have been radically changed and student learning will be reported in terms of the students’ ability to demonstrate proficiency on the key ISS Learning Standards. On November 23rd, ISS will host two parent meetings (am and pm) to provide information on how the new report cards work and should be interpreted.
As we move into the month of October, there are many events to plan and look forward to:
• October 2: PTA Dessert CLUB
• October 6: Pre-School and Elementary Mid Trimester Reports
• October 9: PTA FUN FAIR
• October 14-16: No School
• October 28: PSAT (all students in grade 9-11)
• October 30: Secondary -Last Day of First Quarter
• October 31: Halloween
• Nov. 1: MUN

Las primeras cinco semanas de escuela han llegado a su fin. Estoy muy satisfecho con la reacción de los padres y profesores a las nuevas iniciativas y mejoras que se han implementado durante el verano y los primeros días de clases. Algunas de las iniciativas que quiero destacar incluyen:
• La construcción de un nuevo salón de clases en la primaria (gracias a Eric Urbahn y el comité de SIT quienes diseñaron el edificio). La construcción de éste permitió que le asignáramos un aula específico a Español y Sociales.
• La construcción de un nuevo “kiosko” en pre-primaria (gracias a la familia Gude por donar las tejas para el techo) y “palapas” en la secundaria.
• Nuevos “tetherballs” (gracias al PTA y a la familia Scates) y nuevas barras de ejercicios.
• Mejoras a las áreas verdes (gracias a las familias Bowcutt, Cowern, Nadal y Tannelian por donar su tiempo y materiales).
• La compra de nuevos textos de lectura para la primaria y textos de ciencia para la secundaria.
También quiero tomar esta oportunidad para agrade-cerles a todos los padres que asistieron el Open House para aprender más acerca de las nuevas iniciativas y para conocer a los profesores de sus hijos.
Tanto nuestros nuevos profesores (9) como nuevos estudiantes (29) se han adaptado bien a su nuevo hogar y cada uno trae características especiales que enriquecerán el ambiente de aprendizaje. ISS tiene la suerte de tener un grupo increible de profesionales tanto en el área de enseñanza como en el de administración que trabaja arduamente para crear una experiencia educativa positiva para sus hijos.
Durante las próximas semanas, Uds. empezarán a recibir los resultados de las pruebas estandardizadas que se llevaron a cabo al principio del año escolar. Si desean más información sobre los resultados de sus hijos en la prueba MAP (Medida de progreso académico) y las pruebas STAR (medida del vocabulario básico de lectura y de habilidades matemáticas), por favor hagan una cita con el consejero académico.
Los estudiantes que no alcanzaron las expectativas en las pruebas estandardizadas y/o que no estén aprobando los Objetivos de aprendizaje de ISS recibirán una invitación a “Reinforcement”. Este año, el programa funcionará por cita para que los maestros puedan trabajar en pequeños grupos con los estudian-tes que más lo necesitan. En la primaria, tomará lugar los miércoles (exceptuando los designados para desarrollo profesional – una vez al mes). En la secundaria, los maestros invitarán a los estudiantes de acuerdo al siguiente horario:
• Lunes: Inglés y Estudios Sociales
• Martes: Matemáticas
• Miércoles: Ciencias
• Jueves: Matemáticas
ISS ha hecho otros dos cambios importantes:
1.En la secundaria, todos los estudiantes y maestros han recibido códigos de acceso y contraseñas para entrar a EDLINE (www.edline.net). EDLINE es una plataforma de aprendizaje en línea desde la cual los padres y estudiantes pueden controlar sus notas así como recibir información de los profesores con respecto a tareas o asignaturas futuras.
2.En el pre-escolar y la primaria, hemos cambiado a un sistema de trimestres que significa que los estudiantes recibirán los reportes de notas sólo tres veces al año. Además, los reportes de nota han cambiado radicalmente y el aprendizaje del estudiante se medirá de acuerdo a su habilidad de demostrar proficiencia en los Estándares de aprendizaje claves de ISS. El 23 de noviembre, ISS tendrá dos reuniones, una por la mañana y otra por la tarde, para proveerles a los padres información de cómo funcionan y cómo deben ser interpretados los nuevos reportes de nota.
Al acercarnos al mes de octubre, hay muchos eventos que planificar y anticipar:
• 2 de octubre: Club de Postres del PTA
• 6 de octubre: Reportes de medio trimestre en el pre-escolar y la escuela primaria

Recently, ISS celebrated the 100th day of school which signifies that we are well past the half way point. I would like to thank all of those parents that attended parent teacher conferences on February 3, 2009. I sincerely hope that all children who struggled during the first half of the year double their efforts to ensure that they are at grade level by the end of the school year.
During the last number of months we have collected a wealth of data on student achievement through the application of standardized tests. Along with the report cards, in grades 2-8, we sent home data collected from a new series of tests that measure academic progress (NWEA MAP) as well as data from the accelerated reader program. These assessments provide data on your child’s achievement level in comparison to a US norm and grade level standards. Recently, the counselor met with the students in grades 9-11 to share and discuss their results on the PSAT. At the general assembly on Feb. 25th, we will be reviewing student progress and outlining our plans to continue the improvement process during the 2009-2010 school year.
On March 1st, the Pre-Registration process for the 2009-2010 school year will begin. School fees and changes to the admission and registration process will also be introduced at the General Assembly.
Other upcoming events:
• February 25th – 7:00 pm – General Assembly
• February 27th – Independence Day! No regular classes or events for elementary students!
o (8:00 am) MS students in grades 6-8 Community Service – Beach Clean-Up for those not participating in the parade.
o (9:00 am) HS students in grades 9-12 meet for the parade in front of Infinite Blue
• March 1-31 – Pre-Registration Process Begins.
• March 2, 2009 – Mid-Quarter Progress Reports

Recientemente, ISS celebró el centésimo día de clases que significa que hemos pasado el punto medio del año. Me gustaría agradecerles a todos los padres que asistieran a las conferencias de padres y maestros el 3 de febrero. Sinceramente espero que todos los estudiantes que han estado teniendo problemas durante la primera mitad del año, doblen sus esfuerzos para asegurar que estén al nivel de su grado al final del año escolar.
Durante los últimos meses hemos recolectado muchísimos datos sobre la ejecución de los estudiantes por medio de la aplicación de pruebas estandardizadas. Junto con las notas, en los grados 2-8, les hemos entregado resultados tomados de una nueva serie de pruebas que miden progreso académico (NWEA MAP) así como resultados del programa de “accelerated reader”.
Estas pruebas proveen datos sobre cómo se compara la ejecución de su hijo/a a la norma en los EEUU y los estándares en su grado. El consejero de ISS se reunió con los estudiantes de los grados 9-11 recientemente para compartir y discutir los resultados del PSAT. En la Asamblea General del 25 de febrero, discutiremos el progreso de los estudiantes y delinearemos nuestros planes para continuar mejorando durante el año académico 2009-2010.
El 1ero de marzo, comenzaremos el proceso de pre-matriculación del año 2009-2010. En la Asamblea General, presentaremos la matrícula así como cambios en el proceso de admisión y matriculación.
Otros eventos futuros:
• 25 de febrero – 7:00 pm – Asamblea general
• 27de febrero – ¡Día de la independencia! No habrá clases ni eventos para la primaria.
• (8:00 am) –Estudiantes en grados 6-8 harán servicio a la comunidad – Limpiarán la playa si no participan en el desfile.
• (9:00 am) – Estudiantes en grados 9-12 se reúnen para el desfile frente a Infiniti Blue

Director’s News #1
The first five weeks of school have come to a close. Overall, I am extremely content with the response of the stakeholders to the improvement efforts that were planned throughout the last academic school year and implemented during the summer and first days of school. This year, our teachers are focusing on getting back to the basics using innovative methodologies. In all grade levels, more time and resources have been allotted to the teaching of reading, writing, and mathematics. Tools such as the DRA, Accelerated Reader and Mathematics as well as a new computer based assessment system called MAP will provide rich data on student performance that will permit us to monitor and adjust our instructional strategies to meet student needs. In order to work toward the fulfillment of our school vision to become the leading educational center in the Caribbean region, the school purchased new math and Spanish books in the elementary school and completed the math and English series in the secondary school. The addition of the new PE and music equipment will also permit our students to live healthier lives and to fuel their creative minds.
As we move into the month of October, there are many events to plan and look forward to.
• October 9-10 – English Writing Prompt
• October 13-14 – Spanish Writing Prompt
• October 15 – Early Dismissal (12:00 pm) – Professional Development Afternoon
• October 15-19 – Model UN in Bavaro

Las primeras cinco semanas de escuela han llegado a su fin. En general, estoy muy satisfecho con la reacción de todas las partes interesadas a los esfuerzos de mejoramiento que se planificaron el año pasado y que se implementaron este verano y durante los primeros días del presente año escolar. Este año, nuestros maestros están enfocándose en volver a lo básico usando metodologías innovadoras. Estamos dedicando más tiempo y recursos, en todos los niveles, a la instrucción de lectura, escritura y matemáticas. Con herramientas como las pruebas de DRA y de “Accelerated Reader and Mathematics”, así como un sistema nuevo de asesoría por computadora llamado MAP, obtendremos buenos datos sobre los resultados de los estudiantes que nos permitirán comprobar y ajustar nuestras estrategias de enseñanza para llenar las necesidades de los estudiantes. Para trabajar hacia la realización de la visión de nuestro colegio de llegar a ser el mejor centro educativo de la región del Caribe, el colegio compró nuevos libros de texto de Matemáticas y Español en la escuela primaria y completó las series de Matemáticas e Inglés en la secundaria. Los nuevos equipos para educación física y música, a su vez, permitirán que nuestros estudiantes lleven vidas más sanas y alimenten su creatividad.

Less than four weeks of school remain. During these four weeks, students will be incredibly busy preparing for exams as well as end of the year celebrations. I sincerely hope that all parents and students take advantage of these last weeks to reinforce student weaknesses and to plan enrichment activities for their children during the summer months. On the back of this paper you will find a list of summer opportunities that are available for your children.

Summer Camp News:
The following is a list of summer camps that ISS is planning to offer (depending upon the numbers):
PreSchool Program – Students from 2-5 years old (literature, arts & crafts, sports & more) = 3000 pesos a week beginning June 16th (8:00-2:00).
*Early Elementary Program – Students from 5-7 years old (Reading, Writing, Mathematics, arts & crafts, sports & more) = 3000 pesos a week beginning June 16th (8:00-2:00).
*Upper Elementary Program – Students from 8-11 years old (Reading, Writing, Mathematics) = 1000 pesos per subject a week beginning June 16th (1.5 hours of instruction in each every day for 2 weeks).
*Middle School Program – Students from 11-13 years old (Reading, Writing, Mathematics) = 1000 pesos per subject a week beginning June 23rd (1.5 hours of instruction in each every day for 2 weeks).
High School Reinforcement Program – Teacher will guide the students to complete reinforcement packages and to prepare for re-evaluations if they did not pass any subject (1000 pesos per subject) beginning June 16th.
*Pruebas Nacionales Preparation – Students in grade 8 (Matematicas y Ciencia) = 750 pesos per subject a week from June 16-20 (2 hours of instruction in each every day for 2 weeks). - Students in grade 12 (Matematicas y Ciencia) = 750 pesos per subject a week from June 16-20 (2 hours of instruction in each every day for 2 weeks).
*SAT Preparation – Students in grades 9-11 (Reading, Writing) =1000 pesos per subject a week from June 16-30 (1.5 hours of instruction in each subject per day).
*Sports Camp – Students from 5-9 years of age from 2:00-3:00 (350 pesos per week from June 16-June 30). – Students from 10-16 years of age from 3:00-4:30 (350 pesos a week from June 16-30).
*a minimum number of students must be obtained to offer the program
Note - all fees are subject to change depending upon the number of students that sign-up for the activity.
Beyond the ISS Summer Programs, community members are offering the following programs:
EquiZoo – Horse/Pony riding
Sea Horse Ranch – Tennis School
Vela – Aquatic Sports Camp
Trotamundos – Adventure Camp
Dolphin Splash School – Swimming Lessons
In addition to these camps, many options are also available in Santo Domingo through the Carol Morgan School that will offer a basic skills reinforcement program (Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic) and a professional Soccer Camp.

Also, please note that summer business hours will run from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. The ISS administrative center will remain open all summer.

ISS BOOK FAIR - April 1-2, 2008
Reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. Reading will always be the heart of all knowledge. Passing on the love of reading starts early; therefore, we encourage all parents to set a time aside during the evening for reading. There will always be children who would rather play ball or watch TV, but it is not impossible to get them to read. Reading with your children and modeling good reading habits by reading for your own personal pleasure will help to motivate children as well as buying a book that interests them instead of a movie or a video game.
This year ISS is having a Book Fair to give parents the opportunity to purchase quality books for their children and to get them excited about reading. We have hundreds of books for children between the ages or 2 and 15. The sale will take place on Tuesday, April 1st and Wednesday, April 2nd, from 7:30 to 4:00 in the old library. Books are priced from 130 to 300 pesos, but most are 170 pesos or less. During the ISS Book Fair we also encourage students and parents to buy a book to donate to your child’s classroom.
ISS also has a number of used books that have been discarded from the old library available for parents to take in exchange for a donation toward purchasing more books for the library.
FERIA DEL LIBRO ISS – Abril 1-2, 2008
La lectura es uno de los más grandes regalos que podemos darles a nuestros hijos. Siempre séra la base de todos los conocimientos. Para cultivar ese amor a la lectura se debe empezar desde temprano; por eso animamos a todos los padres a fijar un tiempo durante la noche para la lectura. Siempre habrá niños que prefieren jugar pelota o ver la televisión, pero no es imposible motivarles a leer. La lectura diaria con sus hijos así como el que Ud. mismo lea por placer personal sirve como modelo que ayudará a motivarles a crear buenos hábitos de lectura. Esa misma motivación la recibirán de la compra de un libro que les anima a leer en lugar de una película o un vídeo juego.
Este año la ISS tendrá una Feria del Libro que les dará a los padres la oportunidad de comprar libros de calidad para sus hijos y así entusiasmarlos por la lectura. Tenemos cientos de libros para niños entre 2 y 15 años. La venta se llevará a cabo el martes 1ero de abril y el miércoles 2 de abril, de 7:30 a 4:00 en la antigua biblioteca. Los libros varían en precio de 130 a 300 pesos, pero la mayoría cuesta 170 pesos o menos. Durante la Feria del Libro de la ISS también animamos a los estudiantes y padres de familia a comprar un libro para donarlo a la clase de su hijo.
ISS también tiene una serie de libros usados que han sido descartados de la antigua biblioteca y están a disposición de los padres a cambio de una donación para la compra de más libros para la biblioteca.

I would like to thank all of the parents that attended the General Assembly on Feb. 26th. For those parents that could not attend, information about the new ISS Pre-Registration, Registration, Admission and School Fees for 2008-2009 is available on the ISS website (www.issosua.com). It is vitally important that all parents complete the Pre-Registration Process during the month of March to ensure that your child/ren has/have a guaranteed spot in the classroom next year. The ISS Registration Policy clearly establishes priorities for the registration process and those parents who chose not to pre-register their children could potentially lose their spot to a new admission. I personally am amazed at the number of new admission cases that have contacted ISS during the last months and hope that all ISS members take the appropriate steps toward registration and take advantage of the discounts offered during the month of March.
Upcoming events:
• March 7 – 3:00-6:00 pm : International Day
• March 12 – 2:15 pm : ISS Anniversary / Inauguration Celebration
• March 15-23 – Semana Santa (holidays)
On International Day (Mar. 7) students will be encouraged to dress in the colors of the countries of their origin and to stay after school to participate in the celebration. Activities include the traditional country presentations (culture and cuisine) and games and events. We sincerely hope that parents and students will sign-up and enjoy the celebration of our diversity.
On March 12, 2008, ISS will be honoring its Founding Members and celebrating its 19th anniversary since its conception. In addition, ISS will be celebrating the inauguration of the new ISS Library-Media/Administrative Center.
Quiero dar las gracias a todos los padres que asistieron a la Asamblea General del 26 de Febrero. Para aquellos padres que no pudieron asistir, la información acerca de las nuevas políticas de Pre-Registro, Registro, Admisión y las Pagos Escolares para 2008-2009 está disponible en el sitio web de la ISS (www.issosua.com). Es muy importante que todos los padres hagan el proceso de Pre-Registro durante el mes de Marzo para asegurar que su hijo/s ha/han garantizado su cupo en el salón de clases el próximo año. En la nueva política de Registración de la ISS se establecen claramente las prioridades para el proceso de inscripción y desafortunadamente, los padres que toman la decision de no pre-registrar a sus hijos, podrían perder su cupo para el siguiente año escolar. Personalmente, estoy sorprendido por el número de nuevos casos que estan solicitando admisión durante los últimos meses y esperamos que todos los miembros de la ISS tomen las medidas apropiadas para completar el proceso de inscripción y que se aprovechen los descuentos ofrecidos en el mes de Marzo.

En el Día Internacional (marzo 7), esperarmos que los estudiantes se animaran a vestirse en los colores de sus países de origen y de quedarse después de la escuela para participar en la celebración. Las actividades incluyen las tradicionales presentaciones de los países (la cultura y la cocina), juegos y eventos especiales. El 12 de marzo de 2008 ISS estara celebrando su 19 aniversario desde su concepción y honora sus Miembros Fundadores. Además, estaremos celebrando la inauguración del nuevo Centro Administrativo /Biblioteca-Media de ISS.
