The first full month of school has come to a close. Overall, I am extremely content with the response of the stakeholders to the new initiatives and improvement efforts implemented during the summer and beginning days of the school year. Highlights of some of the initiatives included:
• Construction of a new classroom in Elementary (thanks to Eric Urbahn and SIT who designed the building). Construction of the Grade 1 classroom also permitted the allocation of another classroom for Spanish and Social Studies for Secondary.
• Construction of a new “kiosko” in PreSchool (thanks to the Gude family for donating the roof tiles) and “palapas” in the Secondary.
• New tetherballs (thanks to PTA and the Scates family) and new dips and pull-up bar.
• Improvements to the green areas (thanks to the Bowcutt, Cowern, Nadal, and Tannelian family for donating time and materials).
• Purchasing new Reading texts for elementary and Science texts for Secondary.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thanks those parents who attended Open House to learn more about these advances and to get to know their Child’s Homeroom Teacher.
Our new teachers (9) and students (29) have adapted well to their new home and each brings unique characteristics that will enrich the learning environment. ISS is blessed to have an amazing group of professional teachers and administrators that work incredibly hard to create a positive and quality educational experience for your children.
During the next weeks, parents will begin to receive the results from the standardized testing that we performed at the beginning of the school year. If you would like more information regarding your child’s results on the MAP (Measure Academic Progress) and the STAR Tests (measure basic reading vocabulary and math skills), please make an appointment with counselor.
Students that did not meet the expectations on the standardized tests and/or are not passing the ISS Learning Objectives will be invited to attend reinforcement. This year, reinforcement will work by appointments so that the teachers can work in small groups with the students that most need assistance. Reinforcement by invitation will occur on Wednesdays in Elementary except those Wed. which are set aside for Professional Development (on average, once a month). In Secondary, teachers will invite students in accordance with the following schedule:
• Monday – English and Social Studies
• Tuesday – Math
• Wednesday – Science
• Thursday – Math
ISS has made two other significant changes that are important to note:
1. In Secondary, all students and teachers have been provided access codes and passwords to be used to enter EDLINE (www.edline.net). EDLINE is an online virtual learning platform where students and parents can monitor their grades and receive additional information posted by their teachers in reference to homework and upcoming assignments.
2. In Elementary and PreSchool, we moved to a trimester system meaning that students will only receive report cards three times a year. In addition, report cards have been radically changed and student learning will be reported in terms of the students’ ability to demonstrate proficiency on the key ISS Learning Standards. On November 23rd, ISS will host two parent meetings (am and pm) to provide information on how the new report cards work and should be interpreted.
As we move into the month of October, there are many events to plan and look forward to:
• October 2: PTA Dessert CLUB
• October 6: Pre-School and Elementary Mid Trimester Reports
• October 9: PTA FUN FAIR
• October 14-16: No School
• October 28: PSAT (all students in grade 9-11)
• October 30: Secondary -Last Day of First Quarter
• October 31: Halloween
• Nov. 1: MUN

Las primeras cinco semanas de escuela han llegado a su fin. Estoy muy satisfecho con la reacción de los padres y profesores a las nuevas iniciativas y mejoras que se han implementado durante el verano y los primeros días de clases. Algunas de las iniciativas que quiero destacar incluyen:
• La construcción de un nuevo salón de clases en la primaria (gracias a Eric Urbahn y el comité de SIT quienes diseñaron el edificio). La construcción de éste permitió que le asignáramos un aula específico a Español y Sociales.
• La construcción de un nuevo “kiosko” en pre-primaria (gracias a la familia Gude por donar las tejas para el techo) y “palapas” en la secundaria.
• Nuevos “tetherballs” (gracias al PTA y a la familia Scates) y nuevas barras de ejercicios.
• Mejoras a las áreas verdes (gracias a las familias Bowcutt, Cowern, Nadal y Tannelian por donar su tiempo y materiales).
• La compra de nuevos textos de lectura para la primaria y textos de ciencia para la secundaria.
También quiero tomar esta oportunidad para agrade-cerles a todos los padres que asistieron el Open House para aprender más acerca de las nuevas iniciativas y para conocer a los profesores de sus hijos.
Tanto nuestros nuevos profesores (9) como nuevos estudiantes (29) se han adaptado bien a su nuevo hogar y cada uno trae características especiales que enriquecerán el ambiente de aprendizaje. ISS tiene la suerte de tener un grupo increible de profesionales tanto en el área de enseñanza como en el de administración que trabaja arduamente para crear una experiencia educativa positiva para sus hijos.
Durante las próximas semanas, Uds. empezarán a recibir los resultados de las pruebas estandardizadas que se llevaron a cabo al principio del año escolar. Si desean más información sobre los resultados de sus hijos en la prueba MAP (Medida de progreso académico) y las pruebas STAR (medida del vocabulario básico de lectura y de habilidades matemáticas), por favor hagan una cita con el consejero académico.
Los estudiantes que no alcanzaron las expectativas en las pruebas estandardizadas y/o que no estén aprobando los Objetivos de aprendizaje de ISS recibirán una invitación a “Reinforcement”. Este año, el programa funcionará por cita para que los maestros puedan trabajar en pequeños grupos con los estudian-tes que más lo necesitan. En la primaria, tomará lugar los miércoles (exceptuando los designados para desarrollo profesional – una vez al mes). En la secundaria, los maestros invitarán a los estudiantes de acuerdo al siguiente horario:
• Lunes: Inglés y Estudios Sociales
• Martes: Matemáticas
• Miércoles: Ciencias
• Jueves: Matemáticas
ISS ha hecho otros dos cambios importantes:
1.En la secundaria, todos los estudiantes y maestros han recibido códigos de acceso y contraseñas para entrar a EDLINE (www.edline.net). EDLINE es una plataforma de aprendizaje en línea desde la cual los padres y estudiantes pueden controlar sus notas así como recibir información de los profesores con respecto a tareas o asignaturas futuras.
2.En el pre-escolar y la primaria, hemos cambiado a un sistema de trimestres que significa que los estudiantes recibirán los reportes de notas sólo tres veces al año. Además, los reportes de nota han cambiado radicalmente y el aprendizaje del estudiante se medirá de acuerdo a su habilidad de demostrar proficiencia en los Estándares de aprendizaje claves de ISS. El 23 de noviembre, ISS tendrá dos reuniones, una por la mañana y otra por la tarde, para proveerles a los padres información de cómo funcionan y cómo deben ser interpretados los nuevos reportes de nota.
Al acercarnos al mes de octubre, hay muchos eventos que planificar y anticipar:
• 2 de octubre: Club de Postres del PTA
• 6 de octubre: Reportes de medio trimestre en el pre-escolar y la escuela primaria
• 9 de octubre: Feria de diversión del PTA
• 14, 15 y 16 de octubre: No hay clases
• 28 de octubre: PSAT (grados 9-11)
• 30 de octubre: Secundaria- último día del primer cuarto
• 31 de octubre: Celebración de Halloween
