Mr. James Adkins (USa) HS Science and Forensic Science
Mr. Adkins came to ISS in 2013 after teaching in Cape Town, South Africa for four years. Mr. Adkins grew up in Alabama and attended Auburn University. He spent 30 years in Page, Arizona teaching at the local high school there. His love of water sports spurred his move to international teaching and this lovely island nation.
Ms. Katie Rude (usa) MS/HS English and AP English
Mrs. Katie Rude grew up in Parker, Colorado in the United States. She attended college at Colorado State University where she earned a B.A. in English Education and spent the summers outdoors working at a children’s summer camp. Mrs. Rude taught for 3 years in a rural school, Kiowa High School, as an English, physical education, and economics teacher. After moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mrs. Rude taught 3 years at Liberty High School as an English teacher and assistant Cross Country coach. She earned her M.A. in 2016 in Literacy from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. In her free time, Mrs. Rude is likely found running, hiking, baking or reading. She is excited to immerse herself in the culture of the Dominican Republic and join the ISS school community!
mr. Martin Calkins (USA) MS Social Studies and World History
Mr. Martin Calkins grew up enjoying the Missouri River in Fort Pierre South Dakota. He attended college at South Dakota State University where majored in Geography and History. After college he worked for Garmin International in the Cartography Department. He realized he didn’t want to sit in a cubicle the rest of his life and decided to teach English as a second language in Southeast Asia. When Mr. Calkins returned to the United States he decided to make a career in teaching and earned his teaching certificate. He has spent the last 3 years teaching social studies in the beautiful Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado. Mr. Calkins enjoys snowboarding, biking, and rafting. He is excited to trade his snowboard in for a kite board.
Mr. Ramon Gill (D.R.) MS/HS Spanish and AP Spanish
Sr. Gill has a Bachelor Degree in Modern Languages from UTESA. He has over 20 years experience teaching English, Spanish, German, Italian and French. He began teaching at ISS in 2010.
Mr. Charlie Roth (USa) HS Math, Calculus and Statistics
Charlie Roth joined ISS in 2015 with his wife, Sarah, and their two children, Liam and Amelia. Previous to his arrival in the Dominican Republic, he taught Mathematics to 9th through 12th graders in New York City for 11 years. Before that he was in the Peace Corps, where he taught Mathematics and Physics at Lindi Secondary School in Lindi, Tanzania. Mr. Roth has a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame and a M.A. in Mathematics Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Charlie enjoys traveling the world with his family searching for great SCUBA diving and new experiences.
Rachel Harmon (usa) Grade 6-9 Math
After earning her Bachelors of Science in Education and Math from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, Ms. Rachel Harmon and her husband were ready to travel the world. She has spent the last four years teaching Middle School Math at an American international in northern Mexico and completing her Master’s Degree in the meantime. Rachel is now ready for an exciting new experience of teaching 6th-9th grade Math at ISS for the upcoming school year. Ms. Harmon enjoys running in her free time and looks forward to adding running beach side to her daily routine!
mS. Kristen Chudd (Canada) Grade 6-9 science
Ms. Chudd is ecstatic to be remaining a part of the ISS community as the new Middle School Science Teacher. Her educational journey began in Winnipeg, Canada where she obtained a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biology and a Minor in Mathematics from the University of Manitoba. She then went on to pursue a Bachelor of Education Degree specializing in Middle Years General Science Education. She has experience teaching Chemistry and Biology at the High School level as well as Middle School Science. She enjoys creating engaging and thoughtful lessons relevant to the students’ interests, making learning more enjoyable in the classroom. After school, you can find Ms. Chudd on the water either surfing, kite surfing, or stand up paddling. She is embracing the Dominican culture and way of life and is very excited to call the DR home!
MR. Ben Rude (usa) HS Humanities and AP Psychology
Mr. Ben Rude grew up hiking, fishing, and exploring in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains in the United States. He stayed close to home for college and earned his B.A. in Geography and Secondary Education from the University of Northern Colorado. His teaching career started at Liberty High School in southern Colorado where he spent five years teaching all levels of Social Studies curricula while also coaching Track & Field and American Football. While working at Liberty, he earned his M.A. in Educational Psychology also from the University of Northern Colorado. Mr. Rude has spent summers working as a backpacking guide and is passionate about staying active in the outdoors and spending as much time as possible with his family and friends. This will be his first year of teaching at ISS, and he is thrilled to be joining such a vibrant school and community!
Sr. Oscar Zazo (Spain) MS/HS SOCIALES and AP SPANISH
Sr. Zazo has a Bachelors in Pedagogy, a Postgraduate degree in History applied to Education and a Masters in History applied to Education from PUCMM. He has been teaching at ISS for 16 years in the areas of PE, Sociales, Spanish and Art.
